Stray Puseys

Some Puseys who have not been placed in the Chester County Pusey tree.

Note: There is a large contingent of Puseys from the Maryland Eastern Shore who are not known to be related to Caleb and William Pusey of Chester County, Pennsylvania. I have assumed that any 'stray' Puseys from Sussex or Kent counties in Delaware, or Wicomico, Worcester, Dorchester, Talbot, or Somerset counties in Maryland, are members of this family and have not included them in this list. Unfortunately, not all of the DelMarVa Puseys stayed close to home. I suspect that some of the folks listed below are part of that family but I have not yet collected enough data to place them with certainty.

A small but steady number of Puseys emigrated from England (and France!) throughout the 19th century. They are not provably related to the Chester county Pusey family but their given names and geographical proximity to some descendants of William and/or Caleb can make things challenging sometimes.

Albert Pusey was born about 1827 in England. He is listed in the 1850 census for Vermillion County, Illinois in the Henry Church household as a farmer and unmarried.

Based on his country of birth it seems safe to say that this family is not part of the Chester County Pusey family. Based on his location in 1850, I suspect he is a son of the Richard Pusey listed below. (Richard's household is listed immediately before the Church family)

Alex Pusey was born in Illinois (probably in Champaign county)in October, 1867, the son of William R. and Margaret Pusey. By 1900, he and his wife Leoti (b. about 1875 in Iowa) and their family were living in Cedar township, Nance County, Nebraska. Children include:
Lola A. Pusey: b. June, 1896 in Nebraska,
Rolla C. Pusey: b. April, 1898 in Nebraska,
Charles B. Pusey: b. March, 1900 in Nebraska.

Algernon Pusey is listed in the 1810 census for Falmouth, Stafford county, Virginia. He is 26-44 years old and his household included a wife also 26-44 (b. 1766-1784), one white female 16-25 (sister or domestic?), two daughters and one son 10-15 (b. 1795-1800), and two daughters and one son under 10 (b. 1800-1810). Algernon is almost certainly related to the Janot Pusey also listed in Falmouth in 1810.
Allen Pusey b. ~1806

VA Allen Pusey was born in Virginia about 1806. He is listed in the 1850 census for District 57 of Roanoke County, Virginia, aged 44, carpenter with several other carpenters and apprentices - Allen is the oldest in the household by 11 years.

"Andy" Pusey as he is named in the 1880 census for Lawrenceburg, Dearborn county, Indiana, was a millright, born in Delaware or Maryland about 1820. His parents were also born in Maryland. His wife, Mary M. Unknown was born about 1824 in Germany, as were her parents. They had five children living with them in 1880 and a daughter, Ellen, living with them in Lawrenceburg in 1850, all of whom were born in Indiana:

Ellen Pusey, b. about 1849

Henry Pusey, b. about 1850
Mary Pusey, b. about 1858
Andrew J. Pusey, b. about 1860
Martha Pusey, b. about 1862
Elizabeth Pusey, b. about 1865
A probable seventh child, Emma Pusey, was born in Lawrenceburg in 1852 and was living in nearby Ripley county, Indiana in 1880.

It looks to me that Andrew was a grandson of George Pusey and Sarah Cox, and perhaps the son of George Pusey and Sarah Sellman who fathered a child with a Margaret Ann (b. about 1818 in Maryland) - Margaret and son George, age 14, appear in the 1850 census with in-law's George and Sarah (Sellman) Pusey. George (husband of Sarah Cox) and George Jr. (husband of Sarah Sellman) owned and operated a mill on the Carroll/Frederick county border in Maryland so that would help explain Andrew's occupation in 1880. In addition, another son of George Pusey and Sarah Sellman, Thomas Pusey, gave the Jackson middle name to one of his sons. Still, given the Maryland/Delaware birthplace for Andrew, it is unwise to ignore the possibility of a connection to the DelMarVa Pusey family.

Andrew Pusey was born about 1835 in England, possibly in Richmond, Yorkshire - he emigrated to Connecticut before 1860 where he married Mary, born in Ireland, and they had a son, James T. Pusey, born in New Haven County, Connecticut about 1859. They might also have been the parents of William, born in Connecticut about 1862, Mary, born about 1869 in New Jersey, and Warren C., born about 1870, also in New Jersey. Andrew may have died in Lambertville, Hunterdon county, New Jersey, about 1879. For more information, see Thomas Pusey described below.

Ann Pusey was probably born in Chester county, Pennsylvania between 1829 and 1841. She was the daughter of an unknown Pusey and Mary Ann Yarnall, the daughter of Azel/Azael/Azrael/Israel? Yarnall and Martha Hibberd (m. 1799). Upon her grandmother's death in 1842, Cyrus Cooper was appointed her guardian which suggests that her parents were deceased or otherwise incapable of caring for her. Martha Hibberd's will also mentions Ann's brother, Hibert (Hibberd ? Hubert ?) Pusey. Ann died in 1863, unmarried.

Caleb Pusey b. -1792
m. ?
d. 1810+
NY Caleb Pusey is listed in the Quaker records for 'Nine Partner' Monthly Meetings in Dutchess County, New York as removing to New York (City) (clear of marriage engagement) on January 18, 1810. Based on that date, I am assuming he was at least 18 years old, so born in or before 1792.

This may be the same Caleb Pusey who is listed in the 1840 census for Jay county, Indiana, aged 40-49 (he was the only member of his household).

The first name is a good indication that he is kin to the Chester county Puseys, perhaps a grandson or great-grandson of Caleb and Margaret Pusey through either sons Thomas or James. Thomas was living as of 1771 but nothing more is known about either. The fact that they have not been prominently recorded in the Pennsylvania histories suggests to me that they could have died young or without issue, or that they moved away.

Catherine Elizabeth Pusey b. ~1833
m. ~1855
d. 1880+
PA Catherine was born about 1833 in Pennsylvania to parents who were also born in Pennsylvania. She married Benjamin Franklin Egbert before 1857. Benjamin was born 1-23-1821 and died 7-2-1893. They had at least one child, T. Millard Egbert, born 11-29-1856. As of the 1880 census, Benjamin and Catherine were living in Chester, Delaware county, Pennsylvania.

Given their residence in 1880 and the state of birth for Catherine and her parents, it seems quite likely that she is a member of the Chester county Pusey family.

Charles Pusey (spelled "Pusy" in the 1880 census) was born in Ohio in 1878 and was living with his parents, James and Margaret Pusey in York Twp., Van Wert County, Ohio as of the 1880 census. He is probably the same Charles Pusey who died in 1953 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Tucson, Maricopa county, Arizona. That Charles A. David Pusey b. -1795
m. ?
d. 1815+
PA A David Pusey is listed as a land owner on an 1815 tax list for Drumore Twp. in Lancaster County, Pa, with 180 acres. He is not listed as a non-resident which poses the mystery. I only know of two David Puseys at an appropriate age in 1815. One is the son of David Pusey and Sarah Dixon but I think he was living in Chester County his entire life. It is possible that the tax list is wrong and he was a non-resident owner. The other David Pusey is the son of Nathan Pusey and Mary Brown - the last I know of him is a July, 1809 report from Hopewell Friends Meeting House in Frederick county, Virginia which received him from the Fairfax (Va) Monthly Meeting. It is possible that he returned to Pennsylvania - he would have been 30 years old in 1815.

In 1870, he was living with his parents, George and Mary Pusey and several siblings in Rome Township, Lawrence county, Ohio. The 1880 census reports 'Edward', age 18, with brother Lauren's household in Union Township, Lawrence county. Edward married Martha Arthur and had two children, Loren and Arthur. Edward died in New Orleans in August, 1900.

Elizabeth Pusey b. 1800-20
m. 1817-43
d. 1880
OH Elizabeth Pusey married John Ward in Lawrence county, Ohio at some point between 1817 and 1843. She probably died in May, 1880 in Lawrence county.

I suspect she is a sister to George and Zedock Pusey. Sarah Pusey could be a sister or perhaps an aunt.

d. ?
OH Elizabeth Puzey married Robert Wynn in Lawrence county, Ohio between April, 1857 and January, 1863. If her last name is spelled correctly, she is almost certainly not a descendant of William or Caleb Pusey. If the county clerk phoneticized the spelling then who knows? Elizabeth could have been born as early as 1800 and, if Robert was her second husband, Pusey might be her married name, not her maiden name!

IL "Eliss Pusey" is listed on the rolls of delinquent tax payers for Kankakee county, Illinois for 1883, specifically for lot #1 on block 33.

Ellis Pusey is a popular name among the Chester county Puseys but most contemporaneous Ellis Puseys in the database are Ellis Pusey, born in 1791 in Chester county, Pennsylvania who would have been 92 years old in 1883, and Ellis A. Pusey, born 1871 in Pennsylvania, a little young for property-ownership. Most likely there is an as-yet unknown son born to someone in the years between 1791 and 1871.

Emma was probably the daughter of Andrew Jackson Pusey and Mary M. She was born in Lawrenceburg, Indiana on July 28, 1852 and married Dr. Edward D. Freeman. Edward was born in Manchester, Indiana on November 4, 1853 and died June 20, 1927. His father was born in Maine and his mother in Indiana; they were probably Reuben Henry Freeman (b. 1823 in Pittston, Maine) and Sarah J. Prest (b. 1824 in Lawrenceburg, Indiana). As of 1880, Edward and Emma were living in Ripley county, Indiana with their 8 month-old son Herbert. They are buried in Greendale cemetery in Ripley county, Indiana along with two infant sons. Children include:

Herbert Freeman: b. 10-17-1879; d. 4-5-1882
John Pusey Freeman: b. 1-14-1882; d. 9-26-1882

Emma's father, Andrew J. Pusey, was born in Maryland so he may descend from the DelMarVa Puseys. But, there were a few Chester county Puseys who could have sired a son in Maryland circa 1820 and Andrew's occupation of miller is certainly a common profession among the Chester county Puseys.

Ernest F. Pusey b. ~1910
m. ~1943
d. -2001
Canada
Ernest F. Pusey married Ariel May Birkett. They were married for 57 years before Ernest passed away, followed by Ariel on 7-22-2001. They lived at least part of their lives in Brantford, Ontario, Canada and had at least two children:

Gerry Pusey m. Barbara Unknown
Mary Lynne Pusey m. Hank Kerr

There are a few Chester county Pusey descendents who moved to Canada and even to Ontario but only one with the surname 'Pusey' - Charles and Ruth (Atkins) Pusey in the late 1800's. But, Charles and Ruth had four daughters and no sons. Either Ernest descends from a line that emigrated to Canada later, or perhaps he is not a descendant of the Chester county Puseys.

Evelyn Pusey b. 1823
m. ~1837
d. 1884
VA
OH
Evelyn Pusey was born April 14, 1823, probably in Loudoun county, Virginia. She married Edon C. Tavenner probably in Loudon County about 1837 and they moved to Adams County, Ohio. Edon was born 4-24-1815 in Loudoun county and died 11-28-1861. He was the son of George Tavenner and Martha Nixon, both born in Loudoun county. Evelyn died April 10, 1884.

Evelyn could be a daughter of Joshua Pusey and Mary J. Nixon (perhaps Mary and Martha Nixon were sisters?) or possibly one of Joshua's brothers known to have lived in the Loudon county area in the early 1800's - perhaps David or George, who married in 1823 and had one child born in Virginia in 1824.

George Pusey was born circa 1811-1815 in Huntington, Cabell county, Virginia (now West Virginia. He married Mary Ann Parrish on 12-14-1837 in Lawrence county, Ohio. He is listed as a farmer in the 1870 census for Rome Township, Lawrence county, Ohio with his wife Mary and their family. Mary was born in Ohio about 1823. Their children, all born in Ohio or (West) Virginia, include:

William M. Pusey: b. 1843
m. Laura Jackson: b. 1844
Abigail Pusey: b. 1844
Adrian Pusey: b. 1847
Elizabeth Pusey: b. about 1848
Lorain/Lauren/Loren/Lote Pusey: b. about 1851 in Ohio; d. after 1883
Kenny Pusey: b. about 1853
Clementine Pusey: b. about 1854 in Ohio; d. after 1870
Mary Pusey: b. about 1857 in Ohio; d. after 1870
Edwin (Edward?) Everett Pusey: b. between 1857 and 1862 in Ohio; d. 1900
m. Martha Jean Arthur: b. 1861; d. 1930

George is a rare given name among the Puseys except among the descendants of John Pusey and Katherine Maris - possible fathers to George could include Joshua, George, David or William.

This George could be a son of George and Sarah (Heston) Pusey or Joshua and Mary (Nixon) Pusey. Only one child has been identified for George and Sarah but they had a granddaughter born in Fairmont, West Virginia about 1853 so the names and geography make some sense.

Joshua and Mary (Nixon) Pusey lived in Loudon/Frederick counties, Virginia, not far from the West Virginia panhandle. Only two children have been identified for Joshua and Mary but they could have had more. However, George is not named in Joshua's will, written in 1865. Both Joshua and George Pusey had several siblings who married men born in (or near) West Virginia and migrated to Highland and Clinton counties in Ohio, so the geography fits, it may just be a matter of fiddling with the data to see where it slides in.

David Pusey diappears from my records about 1806, still living in northern Virginia.

The other possibility is that George is a son or grandson of the hypothetical missing son of Robert Pusey and Magdalena Van Meter - several of their daughter Prudence's descendants wound through Cabell county and Lawrence county in the 19th century, a unique path among the Pusey family.

George De Pusey was born in Alsace, France in 1843 or 1844. His parents were also born in Alsace. As of 1880, George was working on a farm owned by Judson Bradley, in Lyons, Wayne county, New York. The 1880 census lists him as single. He is almost certainly not a member of the Chester County Pusey family.

Henry Pusey, age 24, is listed in the 1880 census in St. Louis, Missouri. His occupation is listed as Mill Wright, not an uncommon profession among the Chester county Puseys. He appears to be living in a boarding house run by Henry and Annie Holdbrook. He and both of his parents were born in Ohio.

Hibert (Hibberd?) Pusey was probably born in Chester county, Pennsylvania between 1829 and 1841. He was the son of an unknown Pusey and Mary Ann Yarnall, the daughter of Azel Yarnall and Martha Hibberd. Hibert is mentioned in his grandmother's will, proved in 1842. Since there is no mention of his parents and a guardian was appointed for his sister, Ann Pusey, is seems probably that his parents were deceased or otherwise incapacitated.

James Pusey b. ~1796
m. ?
d. 1870+
PA James Pusey is listed in the 1870 census for East Marlborough township in Chester county with his wife, Phoebe. James was born about 1796 and Phoebe about 1800.

James could fit in many places in the Pusey family tree but the two sons of James Pusey and Rachel Jackson. John Pusey was born in 1762 and Isaac in 1765, both in New Garden township in Chester county. Their parents died in 1765 and 1766 so, if they had not died in infancy, they might have been raised by their oldest aunt and uncle, Joel and Lydia (Pusey) Bailey, of East Marlborough Twp. If either John or Isaac lived to maturity, it seems reasonable they would name a son for their late father, and James' place of residence in 1870 fits.

Update 1: James and Phoebe were both buried in New London Friends Burial Ground (Chester County, Pa.) so they are definitely part of the Chester County Pusey family, but how?

Update 2: James looks like he could be the son of Thomas Pusey (son of John Pusey and Elizabeth Painter) - Thomas married and had at least two sons by the 1800 census for West Marlborough township aged 0-10. Thomas' brother died in 1790 so it seems reasonable that Thomas might have named a son for his late brother.

James was born in England in 1791 or 1792; almost certainly not a member of the Chester county Pusey family. He might have married twice, once to a woman born in New York and a second time to a woman born in England. As of 1880, he was living in Albion, Orleans county, New York, with his daughter and son-in-law, Alvin and Sophia Briggs. I am making some assumptions from several 1880 census listings:

Wife #1: b. before 1818, in New York; d. between 1836 and 1844, probably in New York. Child:
Henry Pusey/Puzey: b. about 1836 in New York; farmer in Barre, Orleans county in 1880

Edgar Puzey: b. about 1863 in New York
Hellen Puzey: b. about 1866 in New York

Wife #2: b. before 1828, in England; d. between 1854 and 1880, probably in New York. Children:
Edwin Pusey/Puzey: b. about 1846 in New York; a bookkeeper for Union Cement and living in Buffalo, Erie county, in 1880.
m. Mary Unknown: b. about 1853 in New York; both parents were born in Wales. Their children:
Bertie Puzey: b. about 1873 in New York
Lillian Puzey: b. about 1877 in New York

Sophia Pusey/Puzey: b. about 1854 in New York;
m. Alvin Briggs: b. about 1854 in New York as were his parents. His occupation in 1880 - 'Saloon'. They were living in Albion, Orleans county, New York with her father, the 88 year old James Pusey.

All four of their parents were also born in Ohio. As of 1880, they were living in York Twp., Van Wert County, Ohio with four children:

The census lists his father's place of birth as Pennsylvania and Ohio for his mother.

The 1870 census shows a 10 year old John 'Pasey' in the household of John Pasey, a 58 year old blacksmith born in England with wife Anne, 52, born in Pennsylvania. So this looks like they are not related to the Chester County Pusey family.

He moved to Miller in 1882, and was admitted to the bar in 1884, and was an attorney with Pusey and Baldwin company. On Sep. 3, 1884, he started the Miller Gazette, an early Democratic newspaper, which he sold after a year. He helped to organize the Democratic party in Hand county. In 1892 he was a county judge; in 1895, he was postmaster. In 1898 he was elected to the State Legislature. He died on June 7, 1937. His children were Edwin A., William J., Anna M., Bertha J., Ursula M., (Mrs. Erlandson), and Paul R."

A list of Hand county, South Dakota birth records names John Pusey and Mary Agnes Adderley as the parents of:

Edwin Adderley Pusey: b. 11-3-1887
Albert Bruno Gaudig: b. 3-16-1894
Ursula Maria Pusey: b. 10-19-1896
Albert Bruno Gaudig may be a transcription error for it makes little sense (unless maybe he was adopted?).

Siblings of John Pusey are: James: b. about 1847 in Illinois, Sarah Jane (Frances?): b. about 1855 in Illinois: living in Condit, IL in 1880 Amanda: b. about 1857 in Illinois: living in Condit, IL in 1870 Nancy A.: b. about 1864 in Illinois: living in Condit, IL in 1880 Emma Ophelia: b. about 1866 in Illinois: living in Condit, IL in 1880 Alexander P.: b. about 1868 in Illinois; living in Nebraska in 1900 Wiley W.: b. about 1871 in Illinois: living in Condit, IL in 1880

Jane was born about 1845. Joseph's occupation is listed as 'Work in Plaming Mill'; I suppose that is a fancy name for a lumber yard or sawmill!

Joseph and Jane had one child listed in the 1880 census:
Edward Pusey: b. 1867 or 1868 in Pennsylvania.

Joshua Pusey b. -1775

OH Joshua Pusey appears in the 1820 census for Columbia, Hamilton county, Ohio. His household includes:

Joshua: b. before 1775
Unknown Male: b. 1810-1820
Unknown Female: b. 1795 - 1804
Unknown Female: b. 1810-1820

It is conceivable that this Joshua was the husband of Hannah West and the son of Joshua Pusey and Mary Miller. The 1820 listing for Joshua Pusey's household in New Garden township, Chester county, Pennsylvania lists a female of Hannah's age but no male old enough to be Joshua. Although Joshua is a popular name among the Chester county Puseys, there are no other Joshua's of the right age living in 1820. This scenario would account for everyone but doesn't explain what Joshua would have been doing so far from home (and is the female 16-25 a daughter or wife!).

Lauren and Mary Jane had at least two children:

Margaret is listed in the 1880 census for Lambertville, Hunterdon county, New Jersey as a widow with the last name of Pusey. She was born about 1810 in England. Nothing more about her husband is known but included in her household are a Joseph M. Hayes, Elizabeth Hayes, and their five-month old son, James E. Hayes. A listing of Hunterdon county marriages shows one on 4-15-1879 between a Joseph M. Hayes and a Lizzie A. Pusey so these are almost certainly the same folks. From the ages, Elizabeth/Lizzie would probably be a granddaughter of Margaret's. The 1880 census shows that Elizabeth Hayes was born in Connecticut, her mother was born in Ireland, and her father was born in England.

I don't know of any 19th Chester county Puseys who returned to England (and then emigrated back to Connecticut). My conclusion is that Margaret, Elizabeth, and their families are not descended from the Chester county Puseys.

PA According to an online listing of marriages in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, Mark Pusey married Jane Barry on May 27, 1787. No other information is known.

The name Mark is not associated with any other Chester county Puseys so it does not provide a positive clue. Lancaster county is adjacent to Chester county and there were Pusey relations living there in the late 18th century. So it is reasonable that Mark might be descended from William or Caleb Pusey.

Mark is possibly the father of the Rachel Pusey described below.

Unless Mark is an additional sibling to a know Pusey family, there are not many places for Mark to attach to the Chester county Puseys. Possibly his father was James Pusey, son of Caleb and Margaret Pusey...?

PA Samuel Pusey was born in 1837 or 1838 in Pennsylvania as were his parents. The 1880 census lists him as a farmer living in East Marlborough township in Chester county, Pennsylvania with his wife Rebecca. Rebecca was born in 1836 or 1837 in Maryland. Her parents were both born in Delaware. No children are listed. Samuel and Rebecca seem young for all of their children to have grown up and moved away. A servant and a hired farm hand are also listed in their census household. My guess is that if they had any children, those children died before reaching adulthood.

Sarah Pusey was born in Virginia in the 1790's, possibly in a county that later was part of West Virignia. She married John Turley October 24, 1811 in Cabell county, Virginia (now West Virginia). John was born 7-12-1785 in Campbell county, Virginia, the son of James Turley. John died in Cabell county in 1851 and Sarah about 1855, possibly in Cabell county too.

John and Sarah had twelve children. Most remained in Cabell county but at least a couple married and moved to Lawrence county, Ohio.

PA Sarah was born about 1859 in Pennsylvania as were both of her parents. The 1880 census shows her as single and living with the William Lauder household in Drumore township, Lancaster county. Wiliam's wife was named Margaret (b. in Pennsylvania about 1835) and Sarah is described as Margaret's daughter. So, I am guessing that a Margaret Unknown from Pennsylvania married an Unknown Pusey between 1853-1859. The Unknown Pusey died between 1859 and 1869 (William Lauder and Margaret's oldest daughter, Mary Lauder, was born about 1870).

Thomas Pusey was born about 1837 in England, possibly Richmond, Yorkshire. His wife Sarah was born in England about 1835. They married before 1863 and lived in Connecticut; Dundee, Monroe county, Michigan; and Stockton, San Joaquin county, California. Thomas probably had brothers James (husband of Mary), born about 1833 in England, and Andrew, born 1835 in England.

William Pusey b. 1781-90

OH A William Pusee/Pusey/Peusey is listed as a taxpayer, Lawrence county, Ohio as of 1821. Presumably he was born between 1750 and 1800 which leaves about half a dozen candidates. A William Pusee is listed for the 1820 census for Union township, Lawrence county, and again as "William Puze" in the 1830 census for the same location.

The 1820 census shows the oldest male as 26-44 and oldest female as 16-25 with a son and a daughter, both under 10.

The 1830 census shows William Puze still in Union township and his age as 40-49; his wife is 30-39 and children include: daughters 10-15, 5-10, and under 5; sons 10-15 and under 5; and a mother/mother-in-law 80-89!

This could be the William Pusey born about 1771 to George Pusey and Sarah Cox in Harford? county, Maryland but more likely a heretofore unknown William Pusey, either from the DelMarVa family or a recent emigrant.

PA William Pusey married Pamela/Pamelia Harlan, the daughter of Ezekiel Harlan and Hannah Heston. Pamelia was born 12-17-1808 in Pennsylvania and died 8-24-1883. As of the 1850 census, she is listed with brother John Harlan's household in Livonia, Wayne Co., MI as Pamela Pusey. She and married a second time to Martin Spaulding on 7-4-1857, so perhaps William died before then? Pamelia's mother's maiden name is a possible clue (or red herring!) - George Pusey, son of Nathan Pusey and Mary Brown, married a Sarah Heston about 1824.

William could have been a son of the Joshua Pusey listed above or could have been a son of the William Pusey who married contrary to discipline in Philadelphia in 1809. That William was the son of William Pusey and Mary Jones and the grandson of Joshua Pusey and Mary Lewis. Both explanations are plausible and could account for the given name of Joshua for the grandson born about 1847. William's occupations in the censuses included Baker to Confectionary to Retail Grocer, all professions that would suggest a non-rural upbringing (like Philadelphia?).

William (and his sister, Elizabeth Pusey Highfill/Highfield) were born in Kentucky and lived and married in Pendleton county of the same state.

In 1848, William married Lucy Pettit (daughter of James Pettit and Milley Angell). The 1850 census shows them still in Pendleton County, Kentucky. In 1852, they moved to Scotland county, Ky and then to Lewis county, Missouri with Lucy's family. Lucy died about 1870-1872 and William remarried, to Frances/Grace Smith in 1873, and both were living in Missouri in 1900. According to census records, William's parents were born in Virginia and North Carolina respectively. In no particular order, here are nine possible scenarios for William's lineage (though it's possible that none of these are correct).

  1. Grandson of William Pusey (b. 1771 in Harford county, Maryland), son of George Pusey and Sarah Cox and grandson of John Pusey and Katherine Maris. Quaker records show him moving to Frederick (now Carroll) county with his parents in 1773 but nothing further.
  2. Grandson of Nathan Pusey (b. 1774 in Pennsylvania or Frederick county, Maryland), son of George Pusey and Sarah Cox and grandson of John Pusey and Katherine Maris. He disappeared from view but may be the Nathaniel Pusey in the 1830 Missouri census.
  3. Grandson of Thomas Pusey (b. 1767 in Chester Co.), son of John Pusey and Elizabeth Painter and possibly the Thomas Pusey who was keeping a tavern in his home in Hawesville, Hancock County, Kentucky in 1829.
  4. Grandson of Isaac Pusey (b. 1765 in Chester Co.), son of James Pusey and Rachel Jackson and grandson of John Pusey and Katherine Maris. Isaac was orphaned shortly after his first birthday. His brother John (b. 1762) was named in grandfather John Jackson's 1791 will but Isaac was not. He might well have been deceased but his grandfather might have omitted him from his will if he had left the Society of Friends and had traveled far away.
  5. Grandson or great-grandson of Robert Pusey (b. 1715) and Magdalena Van Meter or possibly a Shawnee wife
  6. Son of David Pusey (b. 1785 in northern Virginia), son of Nathan Pusey and Mary Brown and grandson of John Pusey and Katherine Maris. He was last recorded in Quaker records living in northern Virginia in 1809.
  7. Son of the 'stray' Algernon Pusey (living in 1810 in Stafford county, Virginia)
  8. Son of the 'stray' Janot Pusey (living 1810 in Stafford county, Virginia)
  9. Descendant of a DelMarVa Pusey family member who crossed the bay into Virginia, perhaps to the Norfolk/Portsmouth area, close to North Carolina.
  10. Descendant of a Pusey who emigrated from England in the 18th century, independent from either the Chester county or DelMarVa Pusey families.
For the first five scenarios, the intermediate son may have been the James Pusey who was rattling around Kentucky in the early 19th century - he married in 1821 in Harrison county, Kentucky (adjacent to Pendleton county) to Rebecca Clemmons. He apparently died before 1830 as there is a Pendleton county record in that year of a marriage between the widowed Rebecca Pewsy to a John Porter. He is an excellent candidate for the father of William and Elizabeth but there is another. A Joseph Pusey was present at the marriage of Joseph Reeves' daughter in Christian County, Kentucky in 1822.
Scenario 1: William had an uncle named James Pusey
Scenario 2: Nathan had the same uncle James
Scenario 3: Thomas had the same uncle James and a brother James who died in 1790
Scenario 4: Isaac had a father named James
Scenario 5: Robert had cousins named James
Scenario 6: David had a great-uncle James

Julianna: b. about 1831 in Ohio (cripple) - possibly Nancy's sister as the 1870 census shows her living with Elizabeth Kueggard, next door to a Jesse Marks.

The 1880 census shows Nancy as the head of household in Rome township with two daughters, a son, and two grandchildren, all unmarried:
Valletta Pusey: b. about 1850 in Ohio
Lucey Pusey: b. about 1855 in Virginia
Clayborn Pusey: b. about 1857 in Ohio
Delbert Zedock Pusey: b. about 1874 in Ohio
Mamie Pusey: b. about 1877 in Ohio

The last two are Nancy's grandchildren, presumably children of one of her sons. Clayborn is listed as single, as are Valletta and Lucey, so they would appear to be children of an unnamed son (or Wesley Clayborn had some children out of wedlock? or they adopted?).

Looking at it all, I would say that a good scenario is that the first generation are children of an unknown son of Robert and Magdalena (Van Meter) Pusey. Robert and Magdalena lived in Pittsylvania county, VA (as did John Turley, husband of Sarah Pusey). Several of the families (Spurlock, Gwinn, Booten/Booton) who married descendents of Prudence Pusey lived during the same time period in the same counties in West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky as the Turley (and Pusey) descendants above.

But, Robert and Magdalena are not 'known' to have had any sons, just three? daughters, two of whom were possibly abducted by Indians along with Robert and Magdalena. Daughter Prudence was not captured. Left all alone, she married during her parents' absence. Her parents' land was sold and her first husband may have lost much of the estate in land speculation. If Robert and Magdalena had a son, he might have been born before their abduction, circa 1745-1758 or 1760-1770 after they escaped from the Indians and returned to Pittsylvania county. He also could have been adopted, or could have even been a son born to Robert and his Indian wife during his captivity.

It is also possible that George Pusey and Sarah Heston are the parents of some or all of (Sarah, George, Unknown, and Elizabeth) and it is just a coincidence that there is some overlap with some of the Robert Pusey descendants.
