Norman Pusey - Proprietor of one of the leading hardware and farming implement retailing establishments in Chester County, J. Norman Pusey of Avondale is not only a prominent business man but also a leading citizen of his community, being interested in all organizations promoting the public welfare and active in those concerned with finance and education. "J. Norman Pusey was born at Highland Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on July 12, 1883, a son of Henry R. and Amy (Hoopes) Pusey. Henry R. Pusey, who was born near Chatham, Pennsylvania, in 1846, established himself in life as a farmer and later became a merchant, an activity in which he maintained his interest until the day of his death, February 28, 1916. His wife, Amy (Hoopes) Pusey, who also was born near Chatham, Pennsylvania, died in 1884. "After attending the elementary schools at Avondale and graduating from the Avondale High School, J. Norman Pusey studied at the George School, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and then began his business career in association with his father, Henry R. Pusey, in Avondale. In this business, the retailing of hardware and farming implements, father and son were joined during 1906 by Philip C. Pusey. Following the death of Henry R. Pusey in 1916, J. Norman Pusey and Philip C. Pusey continued the business under the firm name of H. R. Pusey & Company until 1930, when, following the death of Philip C. Pusey, J. Norman Pusey took over the business and has conducted it through the present time under his own name. In addition to his private business interests, Mr. Pusey gives his time to various other enterprises, being in particular a director of the National Bank of Avondale and a director of the London Grove Building Association. A member of the Republican party politi- cally, Mr. Pusey has always been deeply interested in civic concerns, and he has been generous with his time and abilities in the public interest in this field. For a number of years he served on the Avondale School Board and is at the present time the treasurer of the Avondale School Board as well as the treasurer of the Avongrove Joint Consolidated School District. A member of the New Garden Friends' Meeting, Mr. Pusey also belongs to the West Grove- Avondale Rotary Club. J. Norman Pusey married on June 17, 1911, Alice Hogeland of Newtown, Bucks County, a daughter of Horace Hogeland. Mr. and Mrs. Pusey are the parents of three children: 1. M. Elizabeth, born January 19, 1914. 2. Horace H., born on December 6, 1915. 3. Jean A., born on April 17, 1920."
