"Thomas Lewis Passmore - After many years spent as a farmer and now devoting his retirement to the operation of a general fire insurance business at Avon- dale, Thomas Lewis Passmore is one of the distinguished citizens of his com- munity, a man who has devoted much of his time through the years to the pub- lic interest, both as an official and as a banker and business man. "Thomas Lewis Passmore was born at Strickersville, Chester County, Pennsyl- vania, on November 20, 1866, a son of Lewis and Ellen (Cope) Passmore. Lewis Passmore, a descendant of one of the first families to become estab- lished in Chester County, was born at Doe Run, Chester County, on January 19, 1826. During his lifetime, he followed the family devotion to the soil, spending all his sixty-three years as a farmer and being still active when he died on May 5, 1899. Finally, in 1936 he retired from the soil, but, turning to insurance, he soon discovered he was operating a thriving general fire insurance business at Avondale. Always interested in political problems and civic concerns, he has devoted himself to the public service practically all his life, having been active as a member of the Republican party. He served for approximately twenty-five years as a school director of London Grove Township, was a justice of the peace for many years, in addition to holding office at the present time as burgess of Avon- dale, an office to which he was appointed and then elected in 1941. Among the various organizations to which Mr. Passmore has devoted himself may be mentioned his present offices as president and director of the Building Association of London Grove, his directorate on the board of the National Bank of Kennett Square and his position as secretary and treasurer of the Southern Mutual Automobile Protective Association of Avondale. Mr. Passmore, who is a member of the Society of Friends, belongs to the Avondale Rotary Club and the Avondale Grange. "Thomas Lewis Passmore has been twice married.
